Things to Do in Mestre, Venice: A Local Guide

6 min read · Updated 7 June 2026

Most visitors treat Mestre as a budget base for Venice — and it is a great one. But mainland Venice has a real life of its own: leafy parks, a lively centre, restaurants priced for locals, and easy connections to the rest of the Veneto. Here is how to enjoy Mestre itself, not just sleep in it.

Wander Piazza Ferretto and the centre

Mestre’s pedestrian heart is Piazza Ferretto, a handsome square lined with cafés, shops and the occasional market. It is where locals meet for an aperitivo in the early evening. Around it you will find the everyday Italy that the island, packed with day-trippers, no longer really has — bakeries, family-run bars and proper coffee at a fraction of island prices.

Relax in Parco di San Giuliano

For green space with a view, Parco di San Giuliano is one of the largest parks in the area, stretching along the lagoon edge with open lawns, cycling paths and, on a clear day, views across the water to the skyline of Venice. It is a favourite with families and a welcome change of pace after a busy day among the canals.

Eat like a local: cicchetti and trattorie

Mestre’s food scene is one of its underrated pleasures. Skip the tourist menus of the island and look for bàcari — small bars serving cicchetti, the Venetian answer to tapas, with a glass of local wine. Add to that honest neighbourhood trattorie serving Veneto classics, and you can eat very well here for far less than you would pay near St Mark’s.

Use Mestre as a base for day trips

This is where staying on the mainland really pays off. Venezia Mestre station puts the whole region within easy reach by train: Padua (Padova) in about 25 minutes, Verona in around an hour, plus Treviso, Vicenza and Bologna as comfortable day trips. And of course Venice itself is roughly ten minutes by train.

If you have a car, Mestre lets you keep it nearby and drive to the wider Veneto, then leave it behind and take the train into the car-free island whenever you like.

Easy hops into Venice and the lagoon

From Mestre you can be on the island in time for breakfast and back for a quiet dinner. Spend a morning at St Mark’s and the Rialto, an afternoon on the colourful islands of Murano and Burano, then return to the calm of the mainland in the evening. Splitting your days like this lets you see the headline sights without the all-day crowds wearing you down.
