Murano & Burano Day Trip from Venice: A Complete Guide
6 min read · Updated 7 June 2026
Beyond the main island, Venice’s lagoon holds smaller islands that are well worth a day: Murano, famous for centuries of glassmaking, and Burano, with its riot of brightly painted houses. Add quiet Torcello and you have one of the most rewarding days in the whole region.
How to get there
The islands are reached by vaporetto (water bus). From the Fondamente Nove stops on the north side of Venice, lines run regularly to Murano and on to Burano; Torcello is a short hop from Burano. A day or multi-day vaporetto pass is the most economical way to island-hop, since you will take several boats.
If you are based in Mestre, ride the train into Venice first, then connect to the lagoon lines — straightforward and cheap.
Murano — the glass island
Murano has been the home of Venetian glassmaking since the 13th century, when furnaces were moved off the main island to reduce fire risk. Watch a glassblowing demonstration, browse the workshops, and visit the Glass Museum to understand the craft’s history. Buy directly from a reputable furnace if you want a genuine piece to take home.
Burano — the colourful island
Burano is pure joy to photograph: rows of fishermen’s cottages painted in bold blues, pinks, greens and yellows, reflected in the canals. It is also the historic home of Venetian lacemaking, with a small museum dedicated to the tradition. Wander the lanes, watch for the leaning bell tower, and stop for lunch — the island is known for seafood.
Add Torcello if you have time
A few minutes by boat from Burano, Torcello is where the lagoon was first settled. Today it is almost rural — a handful of buildings, the ancient Santa Maria Assunta cathedral with its Byzantine mosaics, and a deep sense of calm. It is the perfect quiet counterpoint to the busier islands.
How long to spend
You can see Murano and Burano in a half day if you move briskly, but a full day — adding Torcello and a leisurely lunch — is far more enjoyable. Start in the morning to get ahead of the crowds and to leave buffer for the boat connections.
